Set in St Saviour’s Mother and Baby Home in 1964 in the North of England, Be My Baby follows the fortunes of bank clerk Mary
Adams, unmarried and seven months pregnant.
Sent to the Home by a mother intent on keeping up appearances, Mary meets the efficient Matron plus other girls in the same predicament - Queenie, Dolores and Norma – and finds she has to cope with the shame of being unmarried and pregnant, the desire to keep her baby and the dawning realisation that she can’t.
Despite their situation, the girls are resilient and funny, each with their own story to tell. Their youthful effervescence keeps bursting through, as they sing along to their favourite girl group songs of the time – including ‘Be My Baby’ by The Ronnettes, and songs from the Dixie Cups and The Shangri-La’s.
This play is a real treat - it’s funny and sad, with moments that are uplifting and moving – and with some fantastic songs that will get your feet tapping!
